3 tons of cocaine seized in Peru, bound for Belgium

Peruvian anti-drug police have seized 3.4 tons of cocaine. Authorities say the drugs were hidden in a shipment of bananas and were bound for Belgium.

The value of the seized drugs exceeds $68 million. “As part of a powerful operation against drug trafficking, the Peruvian National Police seized cocaine hydrochloride in the Piura region (in northwestern Peru), thus preventing its shipment abroad,” the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

According to a statement from the Peruvian presidency, a criminal organization with members from Peru, Colombia and Europe is behind this attack.

According to the UN, Peru, along with Colombia and Bolivia, is among the world's leading producers of cocaine.
