'A great act of stupidity' Trump attacks UK over Chagos Islands
In addition to Greenland, another island is becoming a bone of contention between the United States and Great Britain. President Donald Trump has described the United Kingdom's agreement to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius as a "great act of stupidity."
The reaction comes months after he backed the move. The UK signed the £3.4 billion deal in May, under which it would retain control of a British-American military base on the largest island, Diego Garcia.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had hailed the deal as a "monumental achievement", but on Tuesday Trump called it an "act of total weakness" and said it was part of a "very long list of national security reasons" behind his efforts to acquire Greenland, reports A2 CNN.
A British government spokesman said it would "never compromise our national security".
