A "suspicious package" near Trump's plane, people who touched it were poisoned

Several people fell ill after opening a "suspicious package" at the air base that serves Air Force One operations in the United States.

A spokesman for Joint Base Andrews (JBA) in Maryland, near Washington DC, said the building where the package was opened was evacuated and the affected individuals received medical attention, remaining in stable condition.

The package reportedly contained an unknown white powder, according to sources familiar with the investigation of the incident, CNN quotes. The air base is where the presidential plane and support vehicles are stationed, and is the point where the US president usually departs for his trips.

The JBA spokesman announced that the building where the incident occurred, as well as a building next to it, were evacuated as a precaution and the area was surrounded by a security cordon.

"Emergency crews arrived immediately, verified that there were no immediate threats and operations have returned to normal. The investigation into the incident is ongoing," he said.

According to CNN, initial testing by a Hazmat team found no immediate hazards. Investigators are also looking into the political content of the package. It is not yet clear the nature or extent of the illness of those exposed.
