The FVA prohibits the import of live animals from this region of Romania
The Food and Veterinary Agency (FVA) has banned the import of live animals and their products from the Maramureș region of the Republic of Romania.
"Based on the official reports of the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) and the European Commission, dated 09.02.2026, it is hereby notified that on a family farm in the Maramureș region, in the Republic of Romania, the presence of rabies in domestic animals has been confirmed. In accordance with the Veterinary Law, the FVA has decided to prohibit the import of live animals, including cattle, sheep, goats and pigs, as well as their products, originating from the infected area in the state of Romania. This measure enters into force immediately," the FVA statement reads.
The announcement states that the Food and Veterinary Agency will continue monitoring the situation and regularly informing the public and economic operators about any new developments.
"The FVA remains committed to close cooperation with local and international institutions, with the aim of preventing the spread of this disease and protecting public and veterinary health," the announcement states.
