After 14 years, Angela Martini explains her kiss with Donald Trump
President Donald Trump was once widely rumored after he was photographed kissing former Miss Albania, Angela Martini, in 2011, even though he was married to Melania Trump.
The incident occurred during a Miss Universe photoshoot in New York, where Martini was invited as a former contestant.
The photos that circulated at the time created the idea of a kiss on the lips, but now, after almost 15 years, Angela Martini tells the Daily Mail what really happened.
She recalls that during the Miss Universe 2010 trials, where she competed for Albania, Trump suddenly noticed her, while she was sitting in a corner, frustrated by what she called "favoritism."
She says: "I saw people who were supposed to be neutral, but were favoring certain girls from the beginning."
According to Martin, Trump had asked former Miss Universe president Paula Shugart who the Albanian girl was. Shugart had replied:
"She's very difficult, she has attitudes, she doesn't follow the rules."
However, Trump insisted on getting to know her. Angela says he approached her, introduced himself, and then told Shugart:
"I want her to shine."
Angela finished sixth at Miss Universe 2010 and says Trump was correct and professional the entire time:
"He was very polite. He never flirted. He was very professional."
This evidence contradicts previous allegations by several former competitors, which Trump's staff has called "baseless allegations."
The famous "kiss" that went viral
In 2011, a photo of her with Trump made international news because it looked like they were kissing. But Angela clarifies: "It was just an optical illusion."
She explains that the camera angle distorted the moment, making it seem more intimate than it actually was. They had simply given each other a kiss on the cheek.
"It was untrue, but it looks strange in the photo, because another girl next to her also has a strange expression, like she's surprised," she says.
She says she was judged harshly by the public at the time, but she didn't let it hurt her because, as she says, "I know my truth." Trump and his team didn't contact her because it "wasn't true."
Angela adds that years later she met Trump and Melania again and they were both "very polite." "I've always had a very respectful relationship with him. I've never felt any bad energy."
Short romance with Kanye West
After Miss Universe, Angela says she got a call from Kanye West one day, after the rapper saw her on a red carpet and got her number. He invited her to lunch at ABC Kitchen in New York.
She recalls: "He was with his bodyguard and he was just complimenting my watch and my bag. He likes to notice the little details of fashion."
Afterwards, Kanye invited her to the studio to listen to new music projects, but the relationship quickly faded because Angela was often bored.
She says Kanye would say, "How can you be upset with me? Everyone wants to be here and listen to this new music," and Angela would say, "Yeah, but I don't want to sit here all day listening to music. I want to do other things."
Later that year, Kanye called her to tell her they needed to break up because he was going to start dating Kim Kardashian.
Love, marriage and difficult divorce
Angela later married Romanian businessman Dragos Savulescu, who for years faced corruption and embezzlement charges, charges of which he was acquitted. But in October she filed for divorce.
She says: "We had a very beautiful, intense and extremely difficult story. We were fighting against a system. But the weight remains. I felt it was the right thing at that moment."
