Air pollution increases in some areas of Kosovo, experts and doctors raise the alarm

Air quality in some areas of Kosovo has deteriorated in recent days, raising concerns about the health of citizens. According to the Kosovo Hydrometeorological Institute, the increase in pollutants is related to lower temperatures, the need for heating and unfavorable atmospheric conditions, such as dense fog and lack of winds.

Air quality experts estimate that these conditions favor the accumulation of pollutants in the lower layers of the atmosphere, while pulmonologists warn of an increased risk of respiratory problems, especially in sensitive groups.

Air pollution remains a significant environmental and health issue in the country. Recent data shows that in some areas, the level of pollutants in the air often exceeds recommended values, affecting the quality of life of citizens.

Air quality expert Shkumbin Shala says the main sources of pollution are heavy traffic, the use of heating fuels, and industrial activities.

"During the cold months, pollution increases significantly due to the burning of wood and oil. This directly affects the quality of the air we breathe every day," said Shala.

Meanwhile, doctors warn of serious health consequences, pulmonologists add that air pollution is a significant factor in the increase in respiratory diseases.

"Patients with asthma, chronic bronchitis and lung disease are most at risk, but even healthy people can be affected by continuous exposure," said Flamur Marku, a pulmonologist.

Experts call for urgent measures, such as reducing traffic, using cleaner energy, and raising citizen awareness.

Meanwhile, according to data from the Hydrometeorological Institute of Kosovo, increased values of air pollutants have been recorded in some areas of the country in recent days.

The deterioration of air quality, according to the IHMK, has also been influenced by the presence of dense fog, high air humidity, lack of winds and the thermal inversion phenomenon, which create conditions for the accumulation of pollutants in the lower layers of the atmosphere.

It is recommended that sensitive individuals limit prolonged outdoor exposure until conditions improve./RTK
