Davos Forum, Von der Leyen: It is time to build a new and independent Europe
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has stressed that geopolitical upheavals should be seen as an opportunity for Europe, not just a challenge. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, she described the change taking place in the world as a “seismic shift” and an opportunity to build a “new form of European independence.”
"This is not a reaction to recent events, but a structural imperative that has existed for a long time. If this change is to be permanent, Europe must also change forever. It is time to seize this opportunity and build a new and independent Europe," Von der Leyen said.
The President of the European Commission also stressed that the European Union chooses "fair trade over tariffs, partnership over isolation and sustainability over exploitation."
Von der Leyen said that Europe is "fully committed" to Arctic security, while criticizing the additional tariffs proposed by President Trump, saying that "they are wrong", RTSH reports.
"Europe's response will be steadfast, united and proportionate. The European Union stands in full solidarity with Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark. Their sovereignty is non-negotiable," Von der Leyen said.
