Gareth Bale reveals the real reason he ended his brilliant career at the age of 33
Welsh legend Gareth Bale has revealed the family health reasons that led to his retirement from football at the age of 33.
Wales' all-time most capped player and top scorer shocked the football world when he announced in January 2023 that he would hang up his boots.
His decision came shortly after Wales were eliminated from the World Cup in Qatar, when they finished last in a group that included England, the USA and Iran.
"I feel incredibly lucky to have fulfilled my dream of playing the sport I love. It has truly given me some of the best moments of my life," the former Tottenham and Real Madrid star said at the time.
Playing for Los Angeles, Bale capped off a brilliant career by winning his first MLS Cup, a winners' medal that added to his collection along with five Champions League titles and many, many others.
And now, speaking for the first time about why he felt it was the perfect time to end his career, the once world's most expensive footballer has revealed how his father, Frank,'s illness caused him to change his focus off the pitch.
"My father got sick and that played a big part in my decision. People don't know what everyone goes through at home, but I quickly realised that life is not just about football," Bale told GQ magazine.
Bale played for teams such as Southampton, Tottenham and Real Madrid, in which he had great success.
He finished his career at Los Angeles FC, where he also won the MLS title in 2022.
