General Motors is abandoning parts of Chinese origin

General Motors is asking suppliers to completely abandon the use of components coming from China, Reuters reports, citing four sources.

This request came amid growing dissatisfaction among automakers due to production disruptions caused by trade conflicts between the countries.

According to sources, GM executives have "strongly recommended" suppliers to find alternatives to China for raw materials and components. The American automaker has also given some suppliers a deadline of 2027, by which they must sever all ties with China.

GM reached out to suppliers in late 2024, but the initiative took on particular significance this year, in the early days of the escalating trade war between the U.S. and China. GM executives say it's part of a broader strategy to increase the "resilience" of the company's supply chain.

Geopolitical tensions between the US and China have put automotive industry leaders in a deep review phase for the entire year 2025.

The continued imposition and removal of tariffs by US President Donald Trump, as well as concerns about shortages of rare metals and chips, have forced carmakers to reconsider their ties with China - which has long been a major source of components and materials.

According to the sources, GM prefers to buy parts made in North America, where the company makes most of its vehicles. However, it remains open to supplies from other regions and countries, with the exception of China, Russia and Venezuela.
