Google aims to keep users away from ChatGPT with “AI Mode” in Chrome
Google has released a new update to its Chrome browser, which includes a new button called "AI Mode," which appears directly below the search field on mobile devices.
This option is currently available to users in the US on iOS and Android devices, while global rollout to up to 160 countries is expected to take place over the coming weeks.
The button is placed above the shortcuts to the most visited pages, allowing users to access AI Mode immediately when they open a new tab. Google aims to get users to click on “AI Mode” before turning to competing services like ChatGPT or Perplexity.
AI Mode provides quick access to Google's AI search and supports multiple languages. Users can ask questions and get summaries, answers, and recommendations without having to open additional services.
At the same time, Google has introduced improvements to "agentic AI," which enable AI Mode to automatically book tickets for events or appointments at local beauty salons.
However, the competition is not sitting idle. Perplexity is developing its own browser, Comet, while OpenAI is working on Atlas, an AI-powered browser that could change the way we use the internet.
Chrome users can update their browser – AI Mode should automatically appear when they open a new tab.
