Hand in hand with his wife Carla Bruni, Sarkozy goes to prison to serve his sentence

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy appeared in court on Tuesday after being sentenced to five years in prison over the Libya affair.

Sarkozy is being held at Paris's La Santé prison, which has a wing for prisoners requiring special protection, such as celebrities. However, the 70-year-old is expected to be placed in a particularly isolated area.

Due to his age, the former president can request parole immediately after the start of his sentence to serve his sentence outside of prison.

A similar rule applies in France for prisoners aged 70 and over. The judiciary must decide on the request within two months.

The compound in building QB4 contains 19 cells for prisoners under special supervision. The prison does not call this a VIP area, but rather a “vulnerable persons area.”

These are prisoners whose safety may be at risk from contact with other prisoners, for example, because they are prominent or their case has made headlines in the media.

The former head of state told the newspaper "Le Figaro" that he intends to take two books with him to read: "The Count of Monte Cristo" in a two-volume edition and a biography of Jesus by Jean-Christian Petitfils.

He also intends to write a book about his time behind bars; Sarkozy is already the author of several books.Indeksonline/
