He learned Russian only to leave Ukraine, the interesting story of Yaya Toure

African football legend Yaya Toure has told an interesting story during his time in Ukraine.

The former Barcelona and Manchester City midfielder, after retiring from football, began working as a coach, writes Indeksonline

He was appointed assistant at Ukrainian team Olympique Donetsk during 2021.

During an interview, the former African midfielder – revealed how he started learning Russian only to be rejected for his stay in Ukraine.

"When I arrived in Ukraine, I had no choice but to learn Russian. Nobody spoke English there. I took a course, I went to school, with seven or eight people in a class.

"At one point, club officials wanted to naturalize me. They said: He speaks Russian, he's one of us, he's our son.

"But what they didn't understand was that I was learning the language just to communicate and find a way to get away," said Yaya Toure.

After completing his adventure in Ukraine and Russia, Toure returned to Europe, where he became an assistant at Standard Liege and is now in Saudi Arabia.Indeksonline/
