Are you in your mid-40s and can't touch your toes? Here's what disease you should be worried about

The elixir of youth is located in the spine. See how much a flexible spine reveals about health in general and, in particular, about cardiovascular health.

The news is good for anyone who exercises regularly and pays attention to the flexibility and elasticity of the body, especially in the back area. In recent years, data clearly shows that the flexibility of the joints and spine is an indicator of the elasticity of the arteries. So the more elastic the back, the “younger” the cardiovascular system of the heart – and this is very positive.

Try the following exercise:

Sit on the floor with your legs extended in front of you. Try to touch your toes with your hands. Are you getting there? Do you still need a lot? Or is it impossible? You just tried a spinal flexibility exercise that reveals a lot about the “age” of your arteries.

Exactly the same experiment was conducted by Japanese researchers, who assessed the ability of 526 adults, aged 20–83, to sit on the floor and touch their toes. The arterial aging of the participants, as quoted by noa.al, was assessed with ultrasound and, for people over 40, a direct link was found between spinal flexibility and arterial elasticity. The study findings were published in the American Journal of Physiology.

Therefore, if you are over 40 and can't reach your toes, you should probably be concerned not only about losing flexibility, but also about your heart health.

The Japanese study is not the only one to show that joint and spine elasticity is directly related to arterial aging. Other studies have shown the undisputed superiority of stretching exercises compared to other types of exercise in terms of improving arterial elasticity.

So, there is a way to improve your flexibility and, consequently, the elasticity of your arteries. The solution is stretching, or strengthening exercises. Another practice that can help in this regard is yoga. In addition to improving the flexibility and elasticity of your arteries, yoga has also been linked to improving cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Remember: the more flexible your spine is, the “younger” your arteries are.
