The 27-year-old Dutchwoman, one of the sport's most recognizable figures, confirmed her status at the most important moment. Initially, her compatriot Femke Kok, the World Cup leader, had set a new Olympic record with a time of 1:12.59, the fastest ever in this discipline at the Olympic Games.
However, just a few minutes later, Leerdam put in a spectacular performance, improving this time by 0.28 seconds, and stopping the clock at 1:12.31.

In the final pair, Leerdam also managed to defeat the Japanese Miho Takagi, the reigning Olympic champion from Beijing, igniting the enthusiasm of the fans and securing the most precious medal.Indeksonline/
