Macron: Trump openly aims to weaken and subjugate Europe

French President Emmanuel Macron has warned against "a shift towards a world without rules" in his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The era has been marked by the "violation" of international law and the taking of control by the law of the strongest, said the French president, who wore sunglasses due to an eye problem.

"It is clearly a very worrying time," Macron said, specifically mentioning the Trump administration's aggressive foreign policy.

He said that recent trade deals reached with the US under the threat of tariffs "undermine our export interests, require maximum concessions and are openly aimed at weakening and subjugating Europe."

Macron also reiterated his view that threats of tariffs used as "leverage against territorial sovereignty" were "unacceptable."
