Migrant boat sinks in Greece, 18 dead – search and rescue operation continues
At least 18 migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea lost their lives after their boat sank south of the island of Crete.
The boat was found by a passing Turkish merchant ship, authorities said.
Two survivors were rescued and a rescue operation to find other people is ongoing.
Greece is a major entry point into the European Union for people fleeing conflict and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, and fatal accidents are a common occurrence.
The short but dangerous journey from the coast of Turkey to nearby Greek islands by dinghy or small boats, often in poor conditions, was once the main route until increased patrols and suspected returns reduced cases.
Authorities have not yet determined where the boat came from. A ship and a plane from the European border agency Frontex, a Greek Coast Guard helicopter and three merchant ships are taking part in the search operation.
