Netanyahu: Trump is creating conditions for a good deal with Iran

US President Donald Trump is "creating the conditions" that could lead to a "good deal" with Iran, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says, but he still has his reservations.

Netanyahu, who met with Trump at the White House on Wednesday, said he generally expressed his "skepticism" and stressed that if a deal is finally reached "it must include elements that are considered very important to Israel," such as ending Tehran's nuclear program, restrictions on its ballistic missiles and its support for armed groups such as Lebanon's Hezbollah, Hamas in Gaza and the Houthis in Yemen.

"The conditions that Trump is creating, combined with the fact that the Iranians certainly understand that they made a mistake the last time, when they didn't reach a deal, could allow the creation of conditions for reaching a good agreement," Netanyahu said before leaving Washington.

Trump's meeting with Netanyahu on Wednesday was held behind closed doors and lasted two and a half hours. The US president described it as "very good" but stressed that no major decisions were made.

"We have a very close, honest and open relationship," Netanyahu said, noting that the discussion focused on many issues, but mainly on negotiations with Iran and that Trump wanted to "hear his point of view."

"The president believes the Iranians have already learned who they are dealing with," he said.
