Never in the history of Switzerland have fewer children been born than now.
The birth rate in Switzerland has reached its lowest level since records began in 1876.
The Federal Statistical Office published the figures on Monday.
On average, only 1.29 children are born per woman. First births fell by 8.5 percent, second births fell by nine percent, and third births fell by 13.6 percent.
Over the past ten years, the overall birth rate of women aged 35 to 39 has been higher than that of women aged 25 to 29.
The desire to have children has dropped significantly among people aged 20 to 29 in recent years.
The desire for two children remains the most widespread./Indeksonline/
