Rubio assures Europeans in Munich: The end of the transatlantic era is neither our intention nor our desire

In another attempt to win the support of the European audience, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that they do not aim to end the transatlantic era.

"At a time when headlines are warning of the end of the transatlantic era, let it be clear to all that this is neither our goal nor our desire, for for us Americans, our home may be in the Western Hemisphere, but we will always be a child of Europe."

He then lists the close ties between Europe and the US, referring to their shared history – with American history beginning with an Italian explorer, the first colonies built by English settlers, and shaped by Scots, Irish and German farmers, who he jokes “significantly improved the quality of American beer”.

He also mentions his own personal history, saying he is reminded "of how our stories and destinies will always be intertwined."

Rubio also refers to NATO troops, saying: "We have shed blood and died side by side."

He adds that the US is "charting the path to a new century of prosperity," but wants to do so together with Europe.
