Saving photos and videos on Snapchat will be a paid service

Snapchat has announced that it will start charging for storing photos and videos, sparking backlash from users who have built up a large archive of old posts.

As the BBC reports, the popular messaging app has allowed users to save previously posted content in its "Memories" feature since its introduction in 2016.

This app says that people with more than five gigabytes of storage will now have to pay to keep it available.

Social media users have reacted with disappointment, accusing the company of being "greedy".

Snap, meanwhile, has acknowledged that "it's not easy to go from getting a free service to paying for it," but suggested that "the cost is worth it" for users.

"These changes will allow us to continue to invest in improving Memories for our entire community," Snapchat said.

It is said that more than a trillion "photos and videos" had been saved by users since its introduction nearly a decade ago.
