Shooting in Manhattan, football star in critical condition
Kris Boyd, a player for the New York Jets American football team, is in critical condition after being shot in the early hours of Sunday in Manhattan, American media report.
New York police told CBS News that the victim, a 29-year-old man, was shot in the abdomen and rushed to the hospital. While authorities did not release his name, the New York Jets confirmed to the BBC that it was Boyd.
According to police, the incident occurred around 02:00 a.m. local time outside the upscale Sei Less restaurant in Midtown Manhattan, following a 911 call reporting gunshots. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made, the NYPD confirmed.
In a brief statement, the Jets said: "We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and have no further comment at this time."
Boyd joined the Jets this year after two seasons with the Houston Texans, one with the Arizona Cardinals and four with the Minnesota Vikings. He was currently on the disabled list after suffering a shoulder injury during practice in August.
Players and fans have reacted immediately on social media. Teammate Jermaine Johnson posted a prayer on X for Boyd's recovery: "Lord, place your healing hand on Kris and lead him to health and safety..."
Numerous reactions have also come from fans expressing support and wishing him a speedy recovery.
