Some scientists debunk the myth that you should drink 2 liters of water a day

Everyone knows that people need water and that we cannot survive without it.

We've all heard that we should drink eight glasses of water, or two liters of water, a day.

This objective is called into question when you consider how much water there really is, and don't we also get water from the food we eat?

So, some scientific medical experts and athletes have been asked if we really should drink 8 glasses of water a day.

And they all said no, in an interview for "The Conversation," he reports. Indeksonline.

Karen Dwyer is the vice-chancellor of the School of Medicine at Deakin University in Geelong. According to him, we should all drink as much water as we are thirsty.

The best measure of your hydration level, according to him, is the color of your urine.

If the color of your urine is very dark, then it means you are dehydrated and need more water. But, if its color is light or clear (like water), then you don't need as much water.

Excessive water intake can be dangerous, especially for those with heart problems.

Vincente Ho is a senior lecturer and gastroenterologist at Western Sydney University.

"No, it's not necessary to drink eight glasses of water a day," he said.

It seems that the origin of the recommendation to drink eight glasses of water a day may have come from a publication by the National Academy of Nutritional Sciences in 1945.

We get a lot of water from the foods we eat. Cauliflower and eggplant, for example, are 92 percent water.

So, healthy adults may not need to drink an additional 8 glasses of water per day.

On the other hand, people with certain illnesses or who live in very hot climates may require a higher fluid intake.

Meanwhile, Jon Bartlett is a sports scientist at Victoria University in Melbourne.

According to him, water requirements are very individual and depend on a number of internal and external factors.

While eight glasses of water a day is recommended as a basic requirement to meet daily physiological needs, the actual amount of water required in a day depends on daily activity, health, and the climate in which we live.Indeksonline/
