Switzerland to hold referendum: No more than 10 million inhabitants

With the slogan "Not a Switzerland with 10 million inhabitants," the far-right Swiss Democratic Party has promoted the referendum to be held on June 10, which could have strong consequences for the country.

Swiss citizens will vote on limiting the resident population to a maximum of 10 million inhabitants, and if the initiative is approved, it will come into effect as soon as the population crosses the threshold of 9,5 million, writes A2 CNN.

The measure envisages imposing restrictions on new entries into the country, including asylum seekers and family reunifications, while Switzerland's current population is around 9,1 million inhabitants.

Supporters of the referendum say the growing population is driving up rents and straining infrastructure and public services. Opponents warn the initiative could damage the economy and jeopardize agreements with the European Union on the free movement of people.Indeksonline/
