The Hague trial in the final phase, lawyers optimistic about the release of the liberators
The trial against the leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army is entering its final phase at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague.
Defense lawyers believe that the latest evidence has been decisive and has refuted the Prosecution's claims, expressing their belief that the final decision should be the full acquittal of the accused.
Lawyer Skënder Musa told RTK that the defense witnesses were powerful and shook the basis of the indictment, which according to him was built on materials fabricated by Serbia and supported by Russia.
"The one who has shaken the indictment, first Mr. Robin, but also other witnesses have been powerful and argumentative. We have also seen Ambassador Hill, who has spoken about the functioning of the Liberation Army during the war and has said that the charges included in the indictment are the same as those made by Milosevic," said Musa.
Meanwhile, lawyer Ardian Bajraktari emphasized that recent evidence has strengthened the defense's thesis about the lack of a proper chain of command in the KLA.
"This evidence only reinforces the opposite of what the Prosecution claims. I am optimistic and believe that if the court is guided by justice, the end of the process will result in the innocence of the accused. The Kosovo Liberation Army did not commit crimes, nor did it have an organized structure that would make it responsible for them," declared Bajraktari.
The lawyers are convinced that, if the court relies on material evidence and credible witnesses, the final decision will be acquittal for the four KLA leaders.
In the coming weeks, the final witness, General Wesley Clark, is expected to be heard, after which the trial will move into the final phase of closing arguments by the parties, before the verdict is announced by the trial panel.
