The US is planning a coin dedicated to Donald Trump

The US Treasury Department has released a design for a $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump to mark the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence in 2026.

The obverse of the potential coin design shows Trump in profile with the word "freedom" above him and "1776-2026" below, according to photos shared by Treasury Secretary Brandon Beach on X and subsequently released by the Treasury Department.

The other side of the coin shows Trump holding a raised fist with the words "war, war, war" written in a circle around the edge of the coin - a reference to what he said immediately after surviving an assassination attempt last year - and a flag in the background.

"While the final design for the $1 coin to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States has not yet been selected, this first draft well reflects the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, even in the face of great obstacles," a Treasury Department spokesman said in a statement.

Otherwise, in 2020, Congress passed a law that allows the Secretary of the Treasury to mint $1 coins in 2026 "with a design symbolizing the 250th anniversary of the United States."

A debate quickly erupted on social media about the proposed coin, given that the law specifically states that “no portrait or head-and-shoulders bust of any person, living or deceased, shall be included in the design of any coin” created to honor a U.S. anniversary.

An 1866 law states that the likeness of no living person can be used on U.S. currency, but that applies to banknotes produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The coins are minted by the U.S. Mint.
