Charlie Kirk murder suspect makes first court appearance
The 22-year-old Utah man accused of killing Charlie Kirk made his first court appearance Thursday as his lawyers push to further restrict media access to the high-profile criminal case.
A Utah judge is weighing the public's right to know details in Tyler Robinson's criminal prosecution against concerns from his lawyers that the intense media attention could interfere with his right to a fair trial.
Robinson's legal team and the Utah County Sheriff's Office have asked Judge Tony Graf to ban cameras in the courtroom.
Prosecutors have charged Robinson with aggravated murder in the Sept. 10 shooting of the conservative activist on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem, just a few miles north of the Provo courthouse. They plan to seek the death penalty.
Robinson arrived at the courthouse with handcuffs on his wrists and ankles and wearing a shirt, tie and pants.
He smiled at family members sitting in the front row of the courtroom, where his mother wept and dabbed at her eyes with a tissue. Robinson's father and brother sat next to her.
