The legendary actor turns 1 years old
Actor Richard Wayne Van Dyke is showing no signs of stopping as he celebrates his 100th birthday.
"The funny thing is, it's not enough. A hundred years is not enough; you want to live longer," said the actor, who turned 100 on December 13. "Which I plan to do."
Speaking to ABC News in a segment that aired on December 12, the "Mary Poppins" and "Dick Van Dyke Show" star credited his good humor, in part, to his wife Arlene Silver, 54.
"She kept me young. She gives me energy, humor and all kinds of support," Van Dyke said.
He spoke openly about his physical limitations in a Sunday Times essay published in November, which described ailments ranging from leg problems to failing eyesight. He added that he has difficulty maintaining concentration in group conversations and often complains about his hearing aids.
“If I miss too many days at the gym, I really feel it – a stiffness that creeps in here and there. If I let that happen, God help me.”
Van Dyke, who recently published the book "100 Rules for Living to 100: An Optimist's Guide to a Happy Life," has maintained an impressive fitness regimen for years.
"I've always worked out three days a week. We go to the gym, still, three days a week," Van Dyke said on the podcast "Where Everybody Knows Your Name."
“I think I’m one of those lucky people who got to do for a living what I would have done anyway,” he said. “I get to do what I do. Play and act like a fool.”
Richard Wayne Van Dyke has won six Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, and a Tony Award. He was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1993 and then into the Television Hall of Fame in 1995. He was recognized as a Disney Legend in 1998.
