Trump proposes banning Chinese companies from flying over Russian airspace on routes to the US
US President Donald Trump's administration has proposed banning Chinese airlines from flying over Russian airspace on flights to and from the United States.
According to this proposal, the use of Russian airspace gives Chinese companies a huge advantage, reducing flight time and fuel consumption, Reuters writes.
Various Chinese companies, including China Eastern Airlines, take advantage of this opportunity, while American companies are not allowed to fly over Russian territory since 2022. This situation was created following sanctions and political tensions between the US and Russia.
The Trump administration argues that this advantage of Chinese companies creates a competitive disadvantage for American airlines, which have longer flight times and burn more fuel, increasing costs.
The proposed ban does not include flights that are operated solely for the transport of cargo, but only those with passengers.
This is another step in the escalation of the trade war between the world's two largest economies, following Beijing's imposition of stricter controls on exports of rare earth minerals, which are important to several American industries.
