Trump sues BBC
US President Donald Trump has said he has an obligation to sue the British media outlet BBC over the way part of his January 6, 2021, speech was edited for a documentary.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said his speech was censored and the way it was presented misled viewers.
"I think I have an obligation to sue them. I think I have to because they misled the public and they've admitted to it. They actually changed my speech on January 6th, which was a beautiful speech, a very calm speech, and made it look radical," Donald Trump said.
This was the first time Trump has spoken publicly about the issue since his lawyers wrote to British media and said the president would file a lawsuit for $1 billion in damages if the broadcaster does not remove the documentary, apologize and offer compensation. For the damage caused.
The BBC edited Trump's speech for the Panorama documentary, which aired a few days before the presidential election in November 2024.
The scandal only began last week, after The Telegraph revealed that a former independent external adviser to the BBC's editorial standards committee raised concerns that part of the speech had been edited in a way that suggested the president explicitly encouraged riots at the Capitol in 2021.
Critics said the way the speech was edited was false and a part where Trump said he wanted supporters to demonstrate peacefully was cut.
In connection with the case, the general manager, Tim Davie, and the news CEO, Deborah Turness, resigned.
