US officials reveal why the Titan submarine sank
OceanGate's Titan submarine sank during its journey to the wreck of the Titanic due to poor engineering and multiple failures to test the ship.
This is stated in an official American report.
The Titan was destroyed in June 2023, killing all five passengers on board, including the CEO of OceanGate.
The US National Transportation Safety Board found that the engineering process behind the vehicle was "inadequate", resulting in defects that meant it did not meet strength and durability requirements, the BBC reports. IndeksOnline.
The NTSB said that, since the firm did not adequately test the Titan, it did not know its true strength.
Also, she was unaware that it was damaged and should have been removed from service before her last trip.
The Titan disappeared in the North Atlantic while attempting to dive towards the wreck of the Titanic.
In August, the US Coast Guard released a report on the explosion, which found the incident was "preventable" and criticized OceanGate's "grossly flawed" safety practices.
Stockton Rush, the executive director of OceanGate, steered the Titan ship on its final voyage.
While some employees said safety was a priority, others, including a former director of marine operations and a technician, highlighted an environment “where safety issues, particularly design issues, were ignored.”
