Ursula von der Leyen visited the cemetery in Potocari, paid homage to the victims of the genocide

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has begun her official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina with a visit to the Srebrenica Memorial Center.

She arrived in Potocari by helicopter.

Accompanied by the Head of the EU Delegation, Luigi Soreca, the Director of the Srebrenica Memorial Centre, Emir Suljagić, the Chair of the Centre's Board of Directors, Hamdija Fejzić, and activist Munira Subašić, von der Leyen visited the cemetery in Potocari and paid tribute to the victims of the genocide.

"In this way, von der Leyen symbolically confirmed the European commitment to the culture of memory and human rights," reports the Vjesti.ba medium.

Later in the day, the President of the European Commission will arrive in Sarajevo, where she will meet with members of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and then with the Prime Minister of the Council of Ministers of BiH, Borjana Kristo.

As part of the visit, statements to the media are also planned, which von der Leyen will give together with Kristo after the bilateral meeting in the BiH Parliamentary Assembly building.

It is expected that this occasion will emphasize the need to accelerate reform processes, strengthen institutional stability and take concrete steps towards fulfilling key criteria for membership in the European Union.
