Two Italian witnesses have recounted their moments of horror from the Sydney terror attack.
"Dramatic is the best way to describe what happened. I lived in Australia for two years and Sydney has always been a safe place. We live across the street from the beach and for the large Jewish community, it was a festive event," said a witness.
At least 12 people have been killed and 29 others injured when gunmen opened fire during a Jewish holiday on Bondi Beach in Sydney.
"My roommate and I were walking near the beach where the massacre happened when we started hearing gunshots. We couldn't understand what was happening, there was confusion, people running away. We hid in a bar and saw everything from there," she said.
According to Italian media, next to her is her roommate, another Italian, Riccardo Gambarin, who had been living in Sydney for two months.
"At 5pm, I was working in an Italian restaurant when suddenly, people got up and ran away. They didn't understand why, so we stayed inside the restaurant, hiding. It's impossible to imagine what had caused the panic. This is a place that radiates calm, we couldn't have expected something like this," he said.
"We are all in shock, we have never felt any danger before," they conclude.
