While medicines are lacking in hospitals, around 40 tons are expected to be destroyed in Gjilan due to expiration.

In Kosovo, citizens often cannot find essential medicines in hospitals or family medicine centers when they need them most.

Around 40 kilograms of expired medicines are waiting to be destroyed in the Gjilan Hospital warehouse.

The General Hospital of Gjilan has already opened the tender for the selection of the economic operator that will dispose of expired medicines and medical materials.

This entire procedure was undertaken after approval from the Ministry of Health and the University Clinical Hospital Service of Kosovo.

The process will be carried out by the winning economic operator, licensed by the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning.

"According to the hospital's management, the destruction of medicines and medical supplies has been going on for 20 years."

The director of the Gjilan hospital, Afrim Cana, said that he requested the destruction from central institutions because the hospital is undergoing renovation and they need more space to store these drugs that need to be destroyed.

"We have requested the destruction of medicines and consumables because we are creating a new hospital, building new ones. In cooperation with the Ministry of Health and the SHSKUK, a tender has been opened where it will be processed in the future with new steps. It is not known exactly how much there is because when the operators start working, they will measure them by quantity or weight, and so after the green light has been given by the Ministry of Health for this request, we will also start the other works."

He further said that it is not yet known which operators will be selected as these are still in the early stages.

"As for the operators, there are two in the Republic of Kosovo and once all criteria are met, the destruction of medicines and medical material present in the Gjilan General Hospital will begin."

Otherwise, the Ministry of Health in coordination with the University Clinical Hospital Service of Kosovo have confirmed to Channel 10 that they are in the initial stages of this tender to then continue with the economic, financial and technical phases./Gazeta10
