Six years since the self-destruction of the Kosovo Government and Assembly

Today marks six years since the self-overthrow of the PDK-AKR government, as well as the self-dissolution of the Kosovo Assembly.

The PDK-AKR coalition was broken at the initiative of the then Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi, but not with the consent of the AKR chairman, Behgjet Pacolli. These two, together with the leader of the opposition LDK, Isa Mustafa, decided to dissolve the Assembly, after meetings with the then president Atifete Jahjaga.

With 90 votes for 4 against and 3 abstentions, the Assembly of Kosovo decided on May 7, 2014 to dissolve itself.

With this decision, the Assembly decided to lead Kosovo to early parliamentary elections, which were held on June 8, 2014.

The motion was raised by a group of 57 deputies on the basis of the agreement between the leaders of PDK and LDK on the dissolution of the Assembly.

The reason was presented by the deputy of PDK, Arsim Bajrami, who said that with this decision, the Assembly opens the legal procedures for announcing the date of the elections.

The initiative of the deputies was then supported by the parliamentary groups of PDK, LDK, while those of AAK presented different positions.

In his last speech before this legislature, Prime Minister Thaçi justified the decision to go to the elections, saying that the last months and weeks have also shown the non-functionality of the institutions.

Thaçi especially recalled the failure of the Assembly to establish the Armed Forces of Kosovo.
