KMDLNj: Arrest of teacher in Pristina disproportionate, immediate review of the measure required

The Council for the Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms (KMDLNj) has reacted regarding the incident that occurred at the "Pavarësia" school in Pristina, where a recording was published in the media showing a physical confrontation between a teacher and a student.

In response, the KMDLNj assesses that this is a case that should be punished, emphasizing that in the recording "a moment is clearly seen where the teacher physically confronts the student", but also "the part where the student kicks the teacher, an action that should also be sanctioned".

"The repetition of this recording caused a major public reaction, after which the teacher was arrested and sent to police custody for 48 hours," the KMDLNJ response states.

However, this organization raises concerns about the lack of information regarding the measures taken against the student involved in the incident. "KMDLJN has no information whether any measures have been taken against the student, either by the police or by the school," it further states.

According to the KMDLNJ, the measure of arrest against the teacher is excessive and one-sided. "We consider the measure of arrest against the teacher to be disproportionate and one-sided, which should be reconsidered immediately," the reaction states.

The organization believes that this case reflects the worrying situation in Kosovo's schools. "This case clearly shows the situation in our schools, where student discipline has fallen to the ground and where educational staff do not have basic working conditions, whether in terms of safety or material," the reaction states.

KMDLNj underlines that respect and cooperation between teachers and students must be mutual, while the role of parents is considered crucial. "The numerous problems in education prove that this cooperation is clearly missing or insufficient," the organization emphasizes.

The KMDLNJ calls for greater institutional commitment to improve the situation.

"We expect the municipal education directorates to increase cooperation with MEST and to take necessary measures to improve the situation," the response states.

Likewise, the KMDLNJ appeals to the Ministry of Internal Affairs to increase its commitment to preventing negative phenomena.

"We expect the Ministry of Interior to increase its commitment to preventing drug trafficking and use, possession of weapons of violence, and the fight against hooliganism, because otherwise, instead of dealing with prevention, we will be dealing with consequences," the reaction concludes.
