Current law – sex without consent is rape

In Sweden, the law has entered into force, which enables sex without the prior consent of the partner to be considered rape, which means criminal prosecution.

With this, Sweden joined several other European countries, reports AP.

Previously, in Sweden, a person could only be prosecuted for violence if there was evidence or threat of violence.

Under the new law, sexual activity that is not preceded by an explicit agreement or other clear demonstration of a partner's consent can be considered rape.

The law does not imply passivity as a sign of voluntary participation in sexual intercourse.

Prime Minister Stephen Leven's government proposed the new law last year, after the #MeToo campaign exposed cases of inappropriate sexual behavior around the world.
