Mexico thanks Biden for halting construction of US border wall

Mexico on Wednesday welcomed US President-elect Joe Biden's decision to halt his predecessor's controversial project to build a wall along the border between the two countries, reports AA.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard praised the move on social media to halt the construction of the wall planned by former US President Donald Trump as well as Biden's efforts to make undocumented immigrants citizens, it reports. IndeksOnline.

"Mexico welcomes the completion of the construction of the wall, the immigration initiative in favor of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program) and the path to dual citizenship," Ebrard stressed.

On inauguration day, Biden signed the memorandum to preserve the DACA program, which protects immigrants who arrived in the country as children from deportation.

Biden also signed the immigration bill which will pave the way for millions of immigrants to US citizenship.

From the beginning, the construction of the border wall was a controversial topic that often ended in friction between Mexico and its northern neighbor.

"President Donald Trump: No. Mexico will never pay for the wall. Not now and not ever," then-Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto tweeted in 2018.

During the administration of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the two leaders approached the topic with more diplomacy, with Trump thanking Lopez Obrador for his support by sending troops to patrol the US-Mexico border.

"I want to thank him for his friendship and his professional working relationship. We really had 27 Mexican soldiers guarding our border over the last two years," Trump said last week.
