Facebook and Google employees will work from home until the end of the year

Facebook and Google have announced that their employees will be able to continue working from home for the rest of the year.

Tech giants have announced plans to reopen their offices soon, but will allow employees to continue working from home.

Google initially said it would allow its employees to continue working from home until June 1, but is extending it until the end of the year.

Facebook said it would reopen its offices on July 6 as coronavirus lockdowns begin to be gradually lifted.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that employees who need to return to the office will start work from July with enhanced safety measures.

But most employees who can do their jobs from home will be able to do so by the end of the year, Mr. Pichai added.

"Facebook has taken the next step in its return to work philosophy. Today, we announced that anyone who can do their work from home can choose to do so until the end of the year," a spokesperson said.

Facebook is still determining which employees will be required to start work, the spokesperson added.

The social media platform was among the first tech firms to ask its employees to work from home. Facebook gave employees $1 bonuses for their work-from-home and childcare costs.

The trend toward working from home may suit some companies as they re-design their office spaces to accommodate new social distancing guidelines, as some employees feel anxious about returning to work in the midst of a global pandemic.
