Scholes with harsh criticism of Ruben Amorim

Paul Scholes has not been stingy with his words about Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, insisting that he is not the right man for the club.

United are currently sixth in the Premier League after a 4-1 win over Wolves.

But after a year at the club, Scholes is convinced that the Portuguese coach is not the man to lead the Red Devils.

Speaking on his podcast with former teammates Nicky Butt and Paddy McGuinness, "The Good, the Bad and the Football", Scholes harshly criticizes Amorim and his philosophies.

Scholes said: "I don't think the manager understands the club, period. I just don't think he's the right man. Manchester United is about risk and fun, above all else. With fans on the edge of the ground, ready for any moment."

"Wing strikers dribbling opponents. Shooting at goal. Little technical ability. There's nothing. That comes from the club. We're talking about a different club - they've got Omar Berrada, Jason Wilcox who are probably brilliant at their jobs, but they're not Manchester United. They have no idea what it's like to take a Manchester United player or bring in a Manchester United manager," he continued.

"If you go to Sporting Lisbon, you see them playing with three at the back. Right away, no. Manchester United never do that. They just can't do it, it's been proven over the years. And I'm talking even before Sir Alex Ferguson, it was always 4-4-1-1 or 4-4-2. Entertaining people. He doesn't have that in him," Scholes added.

He continued by commenting on his style of play, highlighting one match.

"He brought four defenders against West Ham. If we go 1-0 up, the manager always says 'two, three, four'. I remember one time, I think we were playing Chelsea. We went 1-0 up and then we fell a little bit behind. Chelsea were a good team. The manager went completely mad after the game. That doesn't happen here. When you score one, you score two. You go for every chance. You just don't understand," he said.

Of course, Scholes, who only played for one club, was part of the greatest period in United's history.

The midfielder won 11 Premier League titles and during a 20-year career held the third place for most appearances in the club's history.

On the Amorite side, United have made progress compared to the disastrous 2024/25 season.

They are just one point away from fourth place, which should undoubtedly be the aim this season, but the way they are achieving results and the style that Amorim has implemented has irritated Scholes and some fans.

United have struggled since Ferguson retired and the Glazer family's influence took control of the club.

INEOS' investment in February 2024 launched a new vision on the pitch, but there are no quick fixes in modern football.

Amorim is their choice and his job does not appear to be in immediate danger.
