Kosovar arrested in Germany for smuggling Syrians because he felt sorry for them
German federal police have charged a Kosovar man who illegally transported several people across the border in a car registered in Switzerland.
The suspected smuggler was identified on Friday (September 28) at the border crossing on the B2 motorway in Mittenwald, with his Kosovar passport and an Italian residence permit, German media reported, according to Albinfo.ch. His five companions, including two minors, had no documents at all. According to their data, they are five Syrian citizens.
The six passengers were taken to the Federal Police station in Rosenheim, where an investigation began on suspicion of smuggling.
During questioning, the Kosovar initially claimed that he had met the Syrians at a gas station in Austria and had taken them out of great pity.
However, during the interview he contradicted himself and finally admitted that he had made everything up. As the Federal Police investigators have established, the Syrian citizens had been loaded into the car in Italy. He is suspected of having taken 1.600 euros from them for their transport to Germany.
The Syrian nationals were transferred to a refugee shelter. The driver of the vehicle, who has permanent residence in Italy, was taken into custody on Saturday by order of the investigating judge. He will soon be charged with smuggling foreigners.
