The best and worst exercises for asthmatics
Having asthma should in no way deter you from exercising. There are even Olympic athletes who use asthma medication and play sports professionally.
Exercising with asthma is not a problem in most cases, but there are those for whom asthma greatly complicates exercise efforts because exercise causes shortness of breath and other symptoms.
The main thing is to keep your asthma under control, take your medication regularly, and carefully choose the exercises that work best for you.
walking
A study in adults with asthma showed that walking three times a week for 12 consecutive weeks improved their asthma control and their exercise and attack-free levels. They had started their half-hour workout with a five-minute warm-up and finished with a five-minute cool-down. In this case, the warm-up is of great importance, because it allows you to raise the level of tolerance.
Joga
Yoga is recommended for people who have asthma because of the breathing control it promotes, because breathing exercises activate many areas in the lungs. One study found that people who practiced yoga 2,5 hours a week reduced their use of asthma medications after 10 weeks.
Racket sports
Tennis, badminton and other racquet sports allow you to extend your energy level on the court with regular short breaks between match points when you can catch your breath and drink some water. In tennis, the fact that you are always in control of your physical activity and you can adjust the intensity of the game is great.
Baseball
Although it is not a very popular sport for our region, try to play it if you have asthma, because it is a stop-start sport which is much more recommended for asthmatics than sports where the activity is constant, which can be a trigger asthmatic attacks.
Golf
Golf is not only a good therapeutic activity that calms the mind, but it is among the activities that seem to be made for asthmatics. Because of the combination of hitting the club and walking, it is recommended for patients suffering from asthma, but you should pay attention to pollen if you play golf outside.
Notice
Swimming is the most ideal sport for asthmatics, because you breathe in air that is quite humid and mostly warm, while the time spent in a horizontal position in the water can stimulate the movement of mucus that has accumulated in the lower part of the lungs.
Volleyball
Volleyball is a sport that is slightly more active than tennis, golf and baseball, but it is also recommended for asthmatics.
The worst physical activities for asthmatics:
football
Given the intensity of the game, soccer is a sport that is by no means recommended for asthmatics because it involves constant running, but if you are physically fit and into sports, you can try it.
Basketball
In basketball, there is simply too much running, jumping and passing to relax into the sport. But even in this case there are exceptions, Tyson Chandler is an NBA player who was diagnosed with asthma in 2004.
Exercises that can be good and bad for asthmatics are cycling, running, and skiing.
If you have asthma and really want to be physically active, consult your doctor who will take into account your physical predispositions and recommend what is best for you.
